Besides random blurbs in Gamepro growing up and my good friend telling me about this system, I'm really new to this scene.
What's a good starting point to get into this system? Would playing emulation be a good step before purchasing?
Any information would help a lot.
Thanks!

Wait, the PC-98 was mentioned in Gamepro?
Well, most here, and will soon be here, are using emulation. And yeah, it's a good step before looking for the real deal.
A recommend emulator is np2fmgen. The fellow guys of the translation group 46 Okumen (who are all here, BTW) wrote a short guide about getting into PC-98 emulation in general: https://46okumen.com/pc-98-emulation/
The Touhou (which is often a gateway to the PC-98, since the first five games of that series came out for it) fansite Maidens of the Kaleidoscope also has a guide to PC-98 emulation, using np2fmgen, and it's more comprehensive: https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/inde ... ic=11117.0
